Yoko Ono
Today I am continuing my discussion on Censorship in my Women and Art class. I am showing Yoko Ono's performance Cut Piece from 1965 (at Carnegie Hall). It deals with issues such as performance art, sharing and giving, taking, and violating. Please take the time to watch. It is 9 minutes and the film isn't the best quality, but it is so worth watching. (may not be suitable for younger kids - but there is no nudity)

19th century oppression
Today I am teaching my class about 19th century oppression in Victorian England. A few things I find fascinating:
1857: The Divorce Act was passed (women could divorce - only on grounds of desertion or cruelty)
1869: the UK grants UNmarried women who are householders the right to vote in local elections
1894: UK expands women's voting rights to married women in local elections
1918: UK gives a full vote to women of age 30 and older and men age 21 and older
attributes by which a woman judged herself and was judged by society:
four virtues: piety, purity, submissiveness, and domesticity
- without them she was incomplete, and with them she was promised happiness
- religion was valued because it did not take a woman away from her home
- women were warned not to let their intellectual pursuits taken them away from god
- purity - without it she was a "fallen woman"
"fallen woman" - a woman who strays from her expected role (ex. those who work outside of the home, prostitute, governess, dancer, unmarried, independent...)
practice of gynecology was developed during the 19th c.
- women's healthcare was removed from midwives
- women's bodies were now under the control of male doctors
- the term "stirrups" came into use after 1860 (this at a time when women were compared to animals and especially horses who needed to be tamed)

GIST 2/8/2010
GIST
1. I am working from home until I have to teach at 1:30. It is so nice to be able to sit on the couch next to Sushi and do my work.
2. Although I am sick, I took the time to get a latte at Starbucks. It's so nice and warm on this icey day.
3. I am grateful that I am not moving next door to Matt's ex (Sydney's mom). Even though it is vacant and Sydney thinks that would be a great idea!
4. I look forward to my doctor's appointment on Wednesday - no really, it is overdue.
5. I am also looking forward to getting my refund check this week!

Women and Art Class
Today was the first lecture/discussion day for my Women and Arts class. The class is both men and women - there are about 4 guys and 30 gals in the class. The guys said NOTHING today. I wonder if they are regretting taking the class. I try to keep it unbiased, but it is difficult when you are talking about gender to a class filled with women. I think it went pretty well considering. I was impressed that almost all of the students took part in the discussion. Great!!

Teaching Blog
I know that I have yet to post the last pictures of the Everglades. I will, I promise.
In the meantime, I think I might blog about my teaching experiences. That should be interesting, right?
Well, just to start, I am teaching 4 classes at BGSU this semester. I've never taught more than 3 in a semester and my average is 2.
Classes I am teaching now: Western Art 2, Western Art 2 Honors, Women and Visual Art, and American Visual Culture.
So far, I have taught the first day of every class except for the Western Art 2 class (WA2). WA2 is only on Thursdays, from 6-8:50pm. UGH! That should be interesting.
